A Pharisee once asked Jesus, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" (Matthew 22:36). His response shows that the intent behind God's law is love - love towards God the Father, and love towards your fellow man: Jesus said to him, "'Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment." "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37-40) These two statements - love God and love your neighbor - encapsulate the first four and the last six commandments respectively. However, the 10 commandments from the Old Testament are still very important for believers to know and follow because they define how to love God and how to love your fellow man according to God's divine will. We show our love for God by placing Him first. Commandment 1. You shall have no other gods before me. And by not adopting or using physical aids when worshipping Him. Commandment 2. You shall not make for yourself an idol. We show out love by not using His name in vain. Commandment 3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord. And finally, we show our love by keeping the seventh-day Sabbath holy. Commandment 4. Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Subsequently, we can show our love for our fellow man by following the commandments five through ten. First, we show our love for others, by honouring our parents. Commandment 5. Honor your father and your mother. And by not committing murder. Commandment 6. You shall not murder. We also show our love for one another by not committing adultery on our spouses. Commandment 7. You shall not commit adultery. We also show our love for our neighbour, by not stealing from them. Commandment 8. You shall not steal. And by making sure we aren't lying about them. Commandment 9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour. Finally, we can show our love for one another by not coveting other people's possessions. Commandment 10. You shall not covet your neighbour's wife. You shall not set your desire on anything that belongs to your neighbour. God has written his moral law on our hearts. In Hebrews (a book from the new testament) we read God’s word in chapter 8. “The time is coming declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel. I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” We hear the same message from God in Jeremiah chapter 31 (a book from the old testament) |
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people."
God does not change His mind. He tells us plainly in Malachi chapter 3, “I the Lord do not change.”
So, we can trust in His promise of the new covenant because the Lord is holy, righteous, and good.
He is unchanging in His nature and His word must be revered...…
